Ralph’s Thriftway

Olympia, Washington

Project Objectives

The owner of Ralph's Thriftway in Olympia wanted to differentiate the store, to create a high-end boutique atmosphere that visually communicated quality and the store's local history. He hoped to enhance the shopping experience by creating mini specialty "stores" within the supermarket design layout, including a new floral boutique. I-5 also had a mandate to use the existing structure and square footage. This meant finding a way to fit more into the same amount of space.

Design & Planning

I-5 produced a comprehensive supermarket design layout and signage package which utilized the existing structures, focused on Ralph's commitment to quality products, and helped create a comfortable, inviting shopping atmosphere.

The exterior entrance signage was upscaled with neon channel letters for the main entrance of the specialty supermarket and the pharmacy. Interior department signage defined small specialty stores and departments within the space. Each department was given its own unique design to set it apart, while still supporting the overall design.  In addition to the produce, deli, dairy, and regular aisles, the following spaces were addressed:  Subway, Chinatown Cafe, Classic Creations Bakery, Finishing Touch Floral & Gifts, Starbucks, Sushi Kyo, the post office, and the pharmacy. One of the most dramatic changes was an entirely new section near the right entrance, which welcomes customers with a beautiful floral display area without taking up valuable floor space within the main store.

Build & Install

I-5's creative solutions created a design and renovation plan that utilized existing structures, minimizing on-site construction time and complexity.

All of the supermarket decor elements and signage components were fabricated at our state-of-the-art, in-house facility, minimizing on-site construction time and complexity. Installation was also managed by I-5’s implementation pros.

The final result was a store that captured the spirit of a specialty boutique market and differentiated itself from other mainstream supermarket, while celebrating its role as a longstanding member of the community—all within the store’s existing square footage, per the client’s request.
