McDonald's was ready to modernize older locations with a fresh new look while maintaining the franchise's iconic restaurant design and exterior signage and façade elements. This restaurant exterior design had to carry the restaurants into the next decade while complementing McDonald's "Forever Young" branding. The result was a solution that allowed rapid transformations at locations across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska while maintaining the iconic design elements that the brand is known for.

Our Approach
Design & Planning
The design challenge for this project included creating signage and branding elements that complimented existing branding while adding a more contemporary feel to locations. The new design would need to work with a wide variety of store configurations and rooflines and require minimal maintenance. Each component would also need to be pre-constructed so they could be rapidly installed when brought onsite. I-5 rose to the challenge with a carefully considered exterior design and signage plan that met McDonald's brand criteria while introducing a creative flair.
Build & Install
By approaching the exterior upgrades as design-build projects, I-5's design and construction teams were able to create solutions that looked great, were highly durable, and able to be installed in complete assemblies.
Because this approach required minimal structural changes, we were able to streamline municipality permits and greatly reduce onsite construction timeframes. The plan’s flexibility and versatility also allowed for features to be applied to many locations that would have typically required extensive building changes to conform to other methods of construction.
The design solutions created for McDonald's resulted in a striking yet visually familiar solution that brought new life to McDonald’s iconic branding. I-5’s implementation team ensured that the project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, with minimal impact on customer flow.
