Waikoloa Village Market

One of a group of KTA superstores located throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Waikoloa Village Market was an older location ready for an upgrade. The owners contacted I-5 Design, hoping for a store layout design that would revitalize the space without requiring costly structural changes. I-5 devised a completely new interior layout, utilizing elements with an island flavor, warm colors with an exotic accent, and specialty tropical imagery. The plan worked with and around existing store elements and avoided complex structural changes.

Our Approach

Design & Planning

A welcoming, friendly environment was emphasized in elements throughout the transformed store space. The owners were thrilled to be able to accomplish such an upgrade without the expense of a major structural renovation.

An innovative new interior store layout design, simplifying traffic flow and bringing focus to key service areas throughout the store, highlighted unique department areas, defined and identified by custom signage and overhead structures.  These included a hanging grid for the wine department and custom aisle and check stand lane signage.  Custom wall murals depict the bounty of island-grown food.  Specialty art chalkboards create specialty touches that enhance the other signage elements.  Exterior signage was added which reflected the new interior and unified the overall design theme.

Build & Install

The entire transformation happened in just a few weeks. With a modern look and a welcoming atmosphere, the new supermarket gave locals and tourists a specialty supermarket in the Waikoloa area. The new supermarket store layout design theme featured tropical foliage and a warm color palette of sunny yellows and jungle greens. The new hardwood floors, wall coverings and finishes, and department ceiling valances were some of the dominant components in the design. As a one-stop resource, I-5 Design was able to design, fabricate, and implement all the decor items for Waikoloa Village Market. This process reduced  “concept to completion” time and executed the design concept precisely, on-time, and in budget.

Shipped to Hawaii from I-5′s state-of-the-art manufacture facility in Washington State, the decor components were installed like pieces of a puzzle. The planning during the design and building phases not only provided Waikoloa Village Market with a high quality renovation, but also a quick turn-around time. Nobody wants to close their business during construction, but it is also important to maintain a safe environment for customers. Collaboration among the senior designer, project manager, production manager, and on-site coordinator created a plan that would allow Waikoloa to remain open during normal business hours, transforming the space at night to ensure a safe environment and continued revenues.
